Welcome To The Gingerbread House! “Gingerbread” is a term derived from the French word, “gingembraz,” meaning a sweet cake with fancy white icing. The term came into vogue in the late 1800s to refer to the decorative millwork that many people used to adorn their homes. In Savannah, the Gingerbread House is a two-story, Steamboat Gothic home that is a landmark among Savannah’s extensive examples of Victorian architecture. Soon after its completion in 1899, Savannahians began to refer to Cord Asendorf’s house as THE gingerbread house because it had more decorative work than any other home in town. People from all over the world have visited Savannah’s Gingerbread House and sampled its architectural, historical and culinary delights. Built in Steamboat Gothic style, the home actually resembles a land-locked Mississippi paddle wheel steamboat. The one unique aspect that sets it apart is, of course, the elaborate gingerbread arches and spindles adorning the front porches and side balcony of the house. This millwork is original to the house; unlike some Victorian-era homes, all the gingerbread trim on this home was hand turned. Inside, many of the structural aspects of the house are original. Bronze hardware, heart pine woodworking, oak fireplace mantels and gold leaf molding are but a few of the many features that have been in the home since its construction. When the home was built in 1899, it sat on a dirt road that often became dusty in the summertime. To protect the interior from outdoor dust, a double door with a small foyer was designed. The front entry of the house features a hallway with an oak staircase leading to the second floor. The floor plan upstairs essentially duplicates the downstairs layout. To the left of the entry hall is the parlor, a large room with pocket doors that could be closed to retain heat in the winter. In the summer, sheer curtains hung over the parlor entry to provide for a cooler environment. The story of the Asendorfs’ first meeting is full of mystique and romance. Bernhardine had been to a fortune teller who informed her that the next man she met would be her future husband; after leaving the fortune teller’s home, she walked around a corner and encountered none other than Cord Asendorf. As fate would have it, the two were eventually married. In many ways, this German immigrant couple lived the American dream. Cord Asendorf, a native of Osterholz, Germany, came to Savannah at the age of 14. As a young man, he opened a grocery store at the corner of Liberty and East Broad; the building, which is still standing, had a second floor with convenient living quarters, where the growing Asendorf family lived for several years. Through a combination of hard work and shrewd investments in real estate, the couple prospered; in fact, Cord was able to retire from the grocery business when he was only 33. In 1899, the Asendorfs decided to move to the southern outskirts of Savannah. They built the two-story Gingerbread House in an area that became a bustling suburb, populated largely by other Savannahians of German descent. This sketch of the fireplace in the Gingerbread House dining room exemplifies the skillful way in which Victorian families combined the functionality with beauty. The Gingerbread House contains four working fireplaces in the home; originally, each fireplace was used primarily as a source of heat, since indoor furnaces were not yet commonplace. The fireplaces were not only functional, however, but were also attractive. Each fireplace was slightly different, with variety achieved through the use of differing mantel designs, tile colors and tile patterns. Structural components of homes, such as fireplace mantels, stairways, and hardware for doors, were often ordered from carpenters’ supply catalogs, which were much like modern mail-order catalogs. In this way, middle class homeowners could have ready access to ornate objects with which to decorate their homes. Woodworking was considered an art in 19th century Savannah, and this is reflected in the fine craftsmanship used on the wood throughout the Gingerbread House. Columns on the Gingerbread House mantels are made of “tiger oak,” which is oak carved in such a manner as to create a grainy appearance much like tiger stripes. Wood for the stairway was also cut in such a way as to show off the fine oak grain. The remaining wood in the house is pine, treated with a “feathering” or “oaking” process to create the appearance of oak. As a result, dinner at the Asendorf home often involved cousins, aunts, uncles and even assorted neighborhood children. The Asendorfs had a massive dining room table with wheels on the legs. When a hand crank was inserted in the end of the table and turned, the table miraculously rolled on its wheels and grew in length; when fully extended, the table ran from one end of the dining room to the far end of the living room and seated up to 40 people. At large gatherings, adults used this table, with the children relegated to eating on a screened porch at the back of the house. In addition to emphasizing basic family values, turn-of-the-century families also placed great importance on the work ethic. All the Asendorf children had assigned chores; the youngest daughter, Sophie, for example, had to polish the sideboard in the dining room. All the family laundry was done at home; in the basement under the kitchen, three pedestal-base wash basins serve as reminders that laundry for a family of 10 was not as easy then as it might be today! Having a large family, Mrs. Asendorf became adept at regimenting daily activities. Meta and Sophie Asendorf have for many years belonged to a ladies club, the Sew and Sews. More a social club than a sewing club, many of the same women have been members for over 50 years. According to the Sew and Sews’ custom, each time a member’s daughter became engaged, the club would honor her with a tea at the Gingerbread House. The charming ritual provided both a way of extending congratulations and an excuse for socializing. Afternoon tea, accompanied with elegant sandwiches and cakes, remains a perfect way to entertain. To make a perfect cup of tea, just follow these five steps: First, use a clean teapot, rinsed with boiling water to warm it. Put in one level teaspoon of tea leaves for each six-ounce serving desired. Bring fresh cold water to a boil and immediately pour the water over the leaves. Cover and let the tea steep for four to five minutes for full flavor; you may also wish to cover with a quilted tea cozy to retain the heat. Stir once and promptly pour the liquid through a strainer into china cups. Many varieties of tea – plain, scented or herbal – are available for the real connoisseur. The occasion and time of year often determine the choice. The family’s yearly Christmas decorations featured candles in every window of the fanciful house. Their Christmas tree held a place of honor in the parlor, with the double pocket doors leading to the parlor closed to the children until Christmas morning. Each year Cord Asendorf’s son, Cord Jr., put twinkling lights outside, nestled within the graceful gingerbread arches. Children in the neighborhood, many of whom used to walk by the Gingerbread House each day on their way to school, have other memories of Papa Asendorf and Christmas. According to one man who grew up in the neighborhood, Mr. Asendorf, who retired at the age of 33, could often be seen in his rocking chair on the home’s large front porch. Mr. Asendorf liked to speak to the children as they passed the house. Over the years, a legend grew among the neighborhood children that Mr. Asendorf, with his long flowing beard, was none other than Santa Claus himself. According to the legend, Santa Claus lived in the Gingerbread House, just waiting until Christmas Eve to put on his suit and deliver gifts to Savannah’s children. Even though the Gingerbread House now exists in the 20th century, Christmas each year features decorations that are reminiscent of those used a century ago. Tiny twinkling lights adorn the 11-foot Christmas tree, which is covered with hundreds of hand-made lace ornaments. Greenery cascades down the staircase and fireplace columns, highlighted by beautiful pink bows. Carolers on the sideboard even appear ready to burst into 19th-century song. The tradition of Gingerbread House weddings began with the Asendorf daughters, with family weddings, parties, and receptions running into the early morning hours. When Meta Asendorf Crawford was married, an orchestra was hired and the dancing continued late into the night. The Galloways were also married in the Gingerbread House parlor, carrying on the tradition started by the Asendorfs. Honored guests at their wedding were none other than Sophie Asendorf and Meta Asendorf Crawford, the two surviving daughters of the original Asendorf family. Since that time, the house has been used for a wide variety of parties, weddings and receptions. In 1986, one of Cord Asendorf’s great granddaughters – Cathy Fogarty – returned to the family home to have her wedding reception here. Perhaps because of the inviting nature of the gingerbread arches, the Gingerbread House frequently lends itself to romantic events. Several couples have even eloped to Savanah from out of town, choosing the Gingerbread House parlor for a very personal ceremony involving just them and a minister or judge.
